About the Project

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of Black parents whose children are, or were, in special education in public schools in Virginia.

Participation: We are inviting Black parents whose children are, or were, in special education in public schools in Virginia. Participation includes a one-time, 1-hour audio recorded interview. Interview questions will ask about parents' experiences with the special education process, access to special education information, advocacy efforts, and challenges and recommendations to best support Black parents. All participants will remain anonymous. Participants will receive a monetary stipend. Information from this project will be used to support Black parents special education advocacy efforts.

Project Team: This research study is being conducted as a research partnership between Advocating4Kids, Director Mrs. Cheryl Poe and Dr. Kathryn Wiley, Assistant Professor of Education at Howard University, with research support from Briana Gibson (HU Alum) and Maria Davis-Pierre (CEO Autism in Black), and a project advisory team. Contact information: kathryn.wiley@howard.edu
